2014 so far

It's been a while since I logged in here last time - the lack of Internet connection did it's job :/
Whenever possible though, I was checking what had been goin' on in the world of jungle/drum'n'bass. And since 2014 has almost reached the end it is a chance to share what wicked music has been released this year.
So I picked up a few bits (in no particular order) that really did it for me this year.

Kenjah

Technimatic - Desire Paths [Shogun Audio, SHACD 009]

Amazing piece of work. Perfect combination of jungle riddims, soulful pianos/harmonies and sunshine vibes! Personally, it's the best release so far from DJ Friction's Shogun Audio imprint!

Lenzman - Looking At The Stars [Metalheadz, METACD 003]

Forward thinking yet classy, subtle but bass heavy. A debut LP from Dutch master Lenzman does not disappoint. Released on mighty Metalheadz label Looking At The Star is definitely one of the most important albums of 2014! Check out: Through My Eyes and Empty Promise (jubei remix).

S.P.Y - Back To Basics Chapter Two [Hospital Records, NHS260C]

A follow up to Back To Basics Chapter One [Hospital Records, NHS252LP] released earlier this year confirmes S.P.Y's talent to blur jungle classic flavours together with atmospheric liquid rhythms. It's good to see that more and more producers are coming back the the roots instead of following the synthetic-the louder-the better-high hats trend which is unfortunatelly much of visible nowadays in broken music. Outstanding tunes: Twilight Zone and Guidance (with special appearance of Total Science).

Acid Lab - Oddysey LP [Omni Music, OMNI 028]

If LTJ Bukem was put to hibernation in 95-96 and woke up in 2014, his music would sound like this release! Excellent album treating Good Looking sound with a modern twist. Tracks worth checking: Dreams of Mars, M31 and Distant Space.

Intrigue 11- The Anniversary Collecttion (V.A.) [Intrigue Music, INTRIGUE 11LP]

A compilation from Ben Soundscape's label summing up its 11 years of existence. A few classic bits, a few unreleased tunes as well as brand new ones. A must have addition for every jungle/drum and bass follower. Don't Call It Anything by Quadrant, Kid Hops & Iris is a smasher !!!

Amaning - Time Warp [Fokuz, 14085LP]

Bring some liquid vibes. Mix them with clever samples/melodies. Add some experimentation and you will receive Amaning's full length debut LP Time Warp. Huge! Why? just check these tunes for the answer: Be Good To You and High Roller.

Vintage LP (V.A.) [Soul FlexDigital, SFD 0018]

I came across this compilation when reading Kmag the other day. It would pass rather unnoticed if it wasn't for DJ Physics. I haven't heard anything new from this producer for a while therefore I was pleseantly surprised to hear some brand new cuts so I checked the whole compilation. Some real old skools flavas are happening out there! Physics (Feeling So Real) and Howitzer (50 Memories) are doin' serious damage. Worth checking!

Interview with L. Howlett of The Prodigy

Hey... Ho...

Since the new, name-to-be-revealed, album by The Prodigy will hit the streets early next year we would like to share with the interview done with Liam Howlett, for Polish official The Prodigy's fansite, back in June 2010.

Enjoy reading!
(the orignal spelling has been preserved)

TheProdigy.pl: Are you planning to release an EP with unreleased tracks like 'Stab', 'Heatwave' and 'Dean Ken' before releasing a new album?

Liam Howlett: MAYBE THESE TRACKS WILL SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY BUT MY MAIN FOCUS IS ON NEW MATERIAL ,, THESE TRACKS RNT FINISHED SO ID PREFER TO BE DOIN NEW MUSIC NOT GOIN OVER OLD GROUND

TheProdigy.pl: Will the new LP be combination of 'Music For The Jilted Generation' and 'The Fat Of The Land', or will it sound similar to any of those?

L.H.: DONT KNOW UNTIL I START IT , BUT IT WILL BE A SLIGHTLY DARKER RECORD BUT ALLWAYS ONE WE CAN PLAY LIVE

TheProdigy.pl: Can we expect any collaborations on the new LP or you wanna make 100% Prodigy album , only all 3 of you?

L.H.: MAD ITS TOO EARLY IV ONLY JUST STARTED IT! , WHO KNOWS ,, THERE WILL DEFINATLY BE A GUEST GUITARIST AS WELL AS ROB , ID LOOK TO GETTING A FEMALE VOCALIST ON A TUNE WITH KEEF ,,, WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO PLAY WHO ALBUM LIVE ON OUR OWN WITHOUT DRAGGIN LOADS OF GUESTS ABOUT ,, IF WE DID THAT WE WOULD TURN INTO THE GORILLAZ AND WE DONT WANT THAT DO WE !

TheProdigy.pl: Which gig in Poland do you remember the most as far as atmosphere is concerned?

L.H.: THE NEXT ONE WILL BE THE BEST

TheProdigy.pl: What do you think about Poland? Did you have a chance to visit any part of Poland?

L.H.: IM NOT MUCH OF A TOURIST ME SO I TEND TO STAY LOCKED UP IN HOTEL ROOM WITH CURTAINS CLOSED THEN OUT AT NIGHT . BUT I DO KNOW ITS THE PEOPLE IN A COUNTRY THAT MAKE IT WHAT IT IS AND THE POLISH PEOPLE HAVE GREAT PASSION AND TOGETHERNESS WHICH WE RESPECT

TheProdigy.pl: Have you ever thought about installing that laser light system as you had at Mitlon Keynes’ gig for all your show? We know it’s a lot of equipment but that makes the gigs more spectacular and unforgettable.

L.H.: ITS TOO EXPENSIVE TO CARRY THAT SHIT AROUND AND WHEN WE PLAY FESTIVALS ,THE PROMOTERS DONT WANT TO HIRE THEM .. MILTON WAS A SPECIAL OCCASION LETS SAY ,, WE NEVER WANT TO RELY ON ANY LIGHTS

TheProdigy.pl: What about your Ragged Flag label? Have you signed any artists so far?
L.H.: NO , I DONT WANT TO BE A LABEL BOSS , I WANT TO WRITE THE TUNES … WE MAY DO OR WE MAY NOT ..

TheProdigy.pl: Apparently you’re writing a soundtrack for the horror movie. Can you tell us anything about that?

L.H.: AM I REALLY ? WELL THATS NEWS TO ME .. THERE IS ALLWAYS RUMOURS FLYING AROUND BUT I HAVNT CONFIRMED ANYTHING SO NO.. I LIKE THE IDEA OF IT THOU

TheProdigy.pl: How has your way of writing tunes changed over the years? You started with W30, then switched into Cubase. How does it look nowadays? Software or hardware?

L.H.: AH BORING STUFF ! STILL GOT THAT ORIGINAL W30 LEANING AGAINST MY STUDIO WALL … I USE LOGIC WITH ABLETON AND REASON PLUGGED THRU IT . SOMETIMES I JUST USE IT AS A RECORDER LIKE IF IT WAS TAPE WHEN IM MESSING AROUND WITH ALL THE OLD ANALOGUE SYNTHS , GET THEM ALL KICKIN OFF AT THE SAME TIME AND RECORD FOR 20 MINS GOIN MAD , THERES USUALLY A FEW GOOD THINGS THAT COME OUT OF IT .

TheProdigy.pl: In ‘Invaders Must Die’ book and on your Twitter page are photos of Keith with smashed head. Were there 2 different videos made for 'Take Me To The Hospital' EP?

L.H.: YES THERE WERE ,, WE TRYED TO DO ONE WITH WALTER STERN WHO DID FIRESTARTER , BREATHE , POISON ETC BUT IT WASNT GOOD ENOUGH SO WE BINNED IT

TheProdigy.pl: A question related to the past. In 1995 during the gig in France Maxim was replaced on the stage by MC Ruff. Why, do you remember what happened?

L.H.: FUK ME THATS YEARS AGO ,, WELL HE HAD A THROAT INFECTION AND JIMMY ( RUFF) GLADLY JUMPED IN TO ROCK IT .. SADLY JIMMY PASSED AWAY AND WE ALL MISS HIM , HE WAS A PROPER RASCAL AND GEEZER

TheProdigy.pl: What about 'Dirtchamber Sessions Vol.2'? Do you want to focus on writing the new LP or can we count on solo releases in the near future?

L.H.: NAH , IM NOT A DJ , IM DOIN NEXT PRODIGY RECORD , NOT INTERESTED IN DOIN A DJ ALBUM AT THE MOMENT

Liquid continues...

This is another soulful imprint that got my attention recently. I would say their approach is to fine the new liquid talents in the drum'n'bass scene, cause, honestly speaking, I didn't know any of the artists recording for Soul Flex Digital before.

Anyway, they released a complilation LP, titled Vintage LP [Soul Flex Digital, SFD 0018], a month ago and the album perfectly showcases what to expect form this young label.

If you're looking for a fresh blood within the softer side of jungle/drum'n'bass this the place to look for. Label's head honcho DJ Dubsta knows where to find a good music and he has gathered quite a few promising producers under his wings. Just check the tracks of Radias or Howitzer and you will know what I mean!

There's plenty more in the pipeline from Soul Flex Digital so keep your eye out!

Another Drum'n'Bass Album of the Year ?

DJ Friction's Shogun Audio imprint has huge reason to celebrate as Technimatic duo finally unleashed their long-awaited monster Desire Paths [Shogun Audio, SHA08] in the late July.

Full of soulfull vibes Desire Paths will take you on a wicked jounrey along jungle riddims, sun-driven chords and beautiful piano riffs.
It's the finest release from Shogun Audio stable, apart from Johnny L's Back To Ya Roots (dj friction and k-tee remix) and gonna be the best album of 2014!

Things are getting serious: Technimatic's debut LP, Lenzman's fantastic Looking At The Stars album...difficult to choose which of them is better. Or treat them both as the best d'n'b albums of the year ex aequo.

I grabbed both albums already, you should get ones too!

Technimatic - Night Vision [Shogun Audio, SHA08]

Integral Select(ah)

This one has been released a month ago by Integral Records - a label ran by legendary liquid masters Artificial Intelligence. Well, it took them a longer while to put music together for this release (the label was established in 2007) but the compilation does not dissapoint.

The release showcases the Integral Records' history: in a form of back catalogue favourites (Phil Tangent's fantastic Remembrance), new remixes (my favourite, Rotary Motion (calibre remix) by Technimatic & LSB) and unreleased cuts (Holdtight's Burning Flag).
It's an essential release for all AI's followers as well as all the liquid headz out there - add it to your d'n'b collection right away!

The Prodigy live @ Orange Warsaw Festival, Warsaw (14.06.14)

OK, another gig by The Prodigy... I think, it's the 10th time I've seen the live - stopped counting a while ago.

I was going to Warsaw fully hyped, hoping they would drop Rockweiler again! Well, I was recently lucky enough to hear all these 'new' tunes, like AWOL, Dogbite and Jetfighter live as I decided to kill two birds with one stone: visit the capitol (if possible) and see the band live at the same time. In this way, I heard the second version of AWOL dropped in Bratislava (I hope Liam will make something out it for the new LP cause this beat is a killer! Forget about Youtube videos, you had to be there to feel that energy!) and Dogbite in 2012. A two months later, I heard Jetfighter and AWOL (the first version) live at Orange Warsaw Fest 2012 and last year, in 2013, I heard Rockweiler for the first time at Balaton Sound Festival in Zamárdi, Hungary (speaking of which, Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen. Food's just great and people are so friendly... If you have a chance, visit Budapest - you will not regret it!).
However, when I arrived to Warsaw the first doubts started to lurk - heavy rain and horrible wind! Thanks to the latter a part of the stage settings (screen on the left side of the stage) collapsed a day before so a few shows were cancelled. I thought: 'No fukkin way! It can't happen!' When it comes to rain, I had in mind their gig from Orange Fest 2012 when it was pissing down like hell so I was a bit of... worried.
When I reached the festival area the first thing that impressed me was the National Stadium - it's HUGE! I heard that the acoustic inside the stadium was crap but The Prodigy fortunately were about the play at the second, 'outdoor' Warsaw Stage which apprently got rebuilt over the night.

View at National Stadium from the stage
From The Prodigy Instagram

At around 10 PM, after the previous band finished their show - I forgot their name but in my opinion it wasn't the best choice before The Prodigy's gig - the vocalist looked like he was about to commit a suicide. Singing all those melancholic stuff and throwing roses at the audience... Boring. So anyway, once they finished, the preparations for The Prods gig begun. Soon after Liam's set up, Leo's drums, lights and masks background appeared on the stage.

Keith, Maxim and Liam rocking in Warsaw

I noticed more and more people, with The Prodigy's logo on the their t-shirts, gathering in front of the stage and the hype could be really felt.
Minutes were passing and soon after the celebration begun. Lights went down, familiar intro went from the speakers and the band showed up on the stage - Liam, Leo, Maxim, Rob and Keith. And the first surprise - they started with ... Spitfire!
I won't be writing here about each tune cause you know most of them however I have to mention a few of them: Rockweiler - my favourite live track, apart from Run With The Wolves. I heard it before just once (at Balaton Sound, 2013) but... damn, this track rocks! Even better, this time it was a bit reworked, compering to the verion from last year.

AWOL / AWOL Beats - I'm feeling this tune more and more but still, prefer the version from Bratislava's gig. Then, second suprise - 'How many ways you can destroy the human mind'... when they dropped AWOL Beats  - wow, powerful beats! Honestly, powerful!

Spitfast - heard Spitfire at the beginning of the gig so why not to drop a bit of drum'n'bass in the middle :)

And then till the end of the gig usual setlist. But the sound at Smack My Bitch Up was fucking brilliant - I've been to quite a feeeeeew gigs in my life but what I experienced during Smack My Bitch Up happened to me for the first time ever - the bass was so heavy that I could not catch a breath, literally! Wonderful feeling!
So, another great gig, gotta say. Some will disagree, but soundwise, it was my second best gig by The Prodigy (first place, still unbeatable - Palacio de Deportes, Madrid - 2009) and now it's time for the new album!

They recently said that the best album by The Prodigy is the one we haven't heard yet. If it sounds like Rockweiler it will be their best work to date !

A Review Written When Looking At The Stars... Or Listening

A debut LP by Dutch producer Teije van Vliet aka Lenzman finally hit the stores last week.
Apparently two years in making, Looking At The Stars [Metalheadz, METALP003] doesn't dissapoint.

The album contains 15 tracks and showcases eclectic diversity - Lenzman skillfully balances between soulful liquid tunes like Through My Eyes and Paper Faces and heavy bassline beats like Collapse or My Tearz. If it's not enough, there is also room for more emotional down tempoish Anticipate (with beautiful vocals of Martyna Baker) and MCs' driven Move & Focus (feat. Dan Stezo) and Just Can't Take (feat. DRS).

Definitely one of the best albums released in 2014!

Joga Bonito

OK, as the World Cup is about to start in a few hours literally, it's time to bring back to light a tune that made 98's tournament one of the best (at least when it comes to the computer games): Soul Beat Runna by Boymerang, Goldie's protege.

This one comes from Boymerang's debut LP (and the only one so far) Balance Of The Force [Regal, EEG 13] released in 1998. The whole record would have ended up totally unnoticed if it was'nt a sondtrack to EA's FIFA World Cup '98 game where it appeared among the other artits such as Fluke and Chumbawamba.

Wicked game and wicked tune. Hope the 2014 World Cup will be as good as the one from 1998.

Get yourselves in a mood of Joga Bonito!

Back To Basics Chapter One

Been listening this album for a while and thinking about writing a review of S.P.Y's Back To Basics Chapter One [Hospital, NHS252LP] until I came across the one from Juno website.

These are not my words but I fully agree with them:

Carlos "S.P.Y" Lima made his name by putting a decidedly positive spin on drum & bass, filling his 2012 debut album What The Future Holds with string-laden, post-liquid tracks that fused floor-filling rhythms with a breezy, carnival-friendly musicality. On this belated follow-up, the Brazilian producer flips the script, delivering a murkier - if no less beautifully produced - set filled with darker, moodier moments. Given his way with mood and rhythm, it's unsurprising to find that Back To Basics Volume 1 hits home hard. Whether laying down and tech-tinged late night roller Brooklyn (Dub), Jelly Belly, a discordant freak-out Riding The Void or an Inner City Life style vocal groover Dusty Fingers, featuring Diane Charlemagne), Lima is at the top of his game.

Pendulum (DJ Set) @ Czyżynalia, Kraków (17.05.2014)

Kraków's students festival 2014 edition. Two days of proper drinking, live music and party.

Eclectic line up, from hip-hop and rock to metal and dance. A bit of everything for everyone. Lots of bands performing but we're here to review the last show - Pendulum DJ Set.

Pendulum's El Hornet live and direct

What a gig it was!!! I am still buzzing a two days later! A perfect way to close the whole festival. Loud, fast, bassy, muddy and wet.

El Hornet, together with MC Verse, appeared on the stage at around 1am and from the very first track (Pendulum's Crush) took the audinece on a wicked ride over the heavy drum'n'bass tunes, electro-house and dubstep. Loads of music, considering the fact their gig was shortened to over an hour only (festival got to be finished at 2am - decision of Kraków's authorities). But that over 60 minutes were enough for the crowd to go mental; Verse was running there and back, jumping an hyping the crowd, El Hornet spinning records like crazy. Together with muddy field and rain it made the perfect combination for all gathered.

 MC Verse hyping the crowd

Very good selection of tunes throughout the whole set but two 'highlights; must be said: mashing up The Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up (noisia remix) with Vulture by Pendulum and the same trick done a few minutes later with Pendulum's The Island (Part 2) and Internet Friends of Knife Party (which in fact is a side project of other two Pendulum's members: Rob Swire and Gareth MacGrillen) - damn, that was good...that was really good...

So yeah, loads of people can say that their music is shite but when it comes to live gigs - they still rock it like hell!

'Fuck it! I lied! It's drum'nbass! What you gonna do...?'

Kevlar Switch

Not much info can be found about this producer apart from that he is from Canada and besides music he's also into photography.

Speaking about Profane's music, his tunes are released by Inperspective Records - a lable which promotes, on a daily basis, such artists as Equinox, Sinistarr and Breakage - a world class speaking for itself.

And why we are talking about him? Cause in December last year Profane released his debut album V.illan Mills LP [Inperspective Records, INP 018] and what a  great record it is! Loads of old skool amen breaks, twisted basslines and extraordinary samples, first of all.

So it is nice to hear (and listen to) when someone sticks to the roots and is innovative enough to create against the current trends aiming, unfortunately, at bleeps and hi-hats only.

Ladies & Gentlemen. Prepare yourself for Canadian assault!

Beats & Pieces

Last weekend, Matt Black – a half of Coldcut duo/ co-founder of legendary Ninja Tune label has visited Poland on three gigs.

Ninja Tune doesn’t need any introduction, however it is worth to mention Coldcut themselves – whose innovating sampling style, combining hip-hop, jazz melodies and trip hop breaks has a wide range of fans and gave us such artists as The Herbaliser, Amon Tobin, DJ Food and Roots Manuva.

Matt Black, together with Jonathan Moore are considered to be the godfathers of remix, sampling and VJ’ing. The list of their achievements is growing from year to year and Coldcut, as well as the other artists recording for Ninja Tune, have great impact on shape of electronic music scene. Liam Howlett of The Prodigy said once that if it wasn’t Coldcut’s More Beats & Pieces, his dj mix album Prodigy presents Dirtchamber Sessions Vol. 1 [XL-Recordings, XLCD 128] would have never been released.

It’s also interesting that Coldcut have definied the meaning of remix, re-making in 1987 Paid In Full by Eric B & Rakim.

The duo is also known for combining music with visuals effects. Good example of this can be above mentioned More Beats & Pieces. However only Timber EP [Ninja Tune, ZEN 1265] co-produced by VJ team Hextatic and released in 1997 turned out to be the most successful. All benefits from selling were transferred to Greenpeace organization to protect the Amazonia forests.

Coldcut & Hextatic - Timber [Ninja Tune, ZEN 1265]

And how it is to see Coldcut live? Unbelievable doze of energy and the most importantly wicked visual collages co-operating with mixed sounds. Awesome experience.
Their work can be the most closely described in the following way:

Ninja...Tune...
The greatest recording organization in the world,
presents a demonstration of their new stereophonic discs.
Since the far off days,
when man first heard a scratchy noise
sccra-scra-scra-scratchy noise...
