Beats & Pieces

Last weekend, Matt Black – a half of Coldcut duo/ co-founder of legendary Ninja Tune label has visited Poland on three gigs.

Ninja Tune doesn’t need any introduction, however it is worth to mention Coldcut themselves – whose innovating sampling style, combining hip-hop, jazz melodies and trip hop breaks has a wide range of fans and gave us such artists as The Herbaliser, Amon Tobin, DJ Food and Roots Manuva.

Matt Black, together with Jonathan Moore are considered to be the godfathers of remix, sampling and VJ’ing. The list of their achievements is growing from year to year and Coldcut, as well as the other artists recording for Ninja Tune, have great impact on shape of electronic music scene. Liam Howlett of The Prodigy said once that if it wasn’t Coldcut’s More Beats & Pieces, his dj mix album Prodigy presents Dirtchamber Sessions Vol. 1 [XL-Recordings, XLCD 128] would have never been released.

It’s also interesting that Coldcut have definied the meaning of remix, re-making in 1987 Paid In Full by Eric B & Rakim.

The duo is also known for combining music with visuals effects. Good example of this can be above mentioned More Beats & Pieces. However only Timber EP [Ninja Tune, ZEN 1265] co-produced by VJ team Hextatic and released in 1997 turned out to be the most successful. All benefits from selling were transferred to Greenpeace organization to protect the Amazonia forests.

Coldcut & Hextatic - Timber [Ninja Tune, ZEN 1265]

And how it is to see Coldcut live? Unbelievable doze of energy and the most importantly wicked visual collages co-operating with mixed sounds. Awesome experience.
Their work can be the most closely described in the following way:

Ninja...Tune...
The greatest recording organization in the world,
presents a demonstration of their new stereophonic discs.
Since the far off days,
when man first heard a scratchy noise
sccra-scra-scra-scratchy noise...

Kenjah February 2014 mix

So this mix was recorded as a result of messing with the below equipment - Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol X1 - nice piece of tool for those wanting to have a break from vinyls and putting their hands on digital mixing.

The selection of tracks was inspired by records and compilations released by Rinse and German label !K7. The artists appearing in the mix are equally responsible for the overall flow in the mix.

Well, not drum'n'bass only we are living for...

Enjoy!

Legend Remixed

A legendary album by one of the icons of modern music submitted to a... face lifting.

All the tracks from Legend have been remixed by the modern DJs/producers hailing from the various musical backgrounds.

We have tunes re-shaped by the likes of Roni Size, Photek, Thievery Corporation and Z-Trip. There is also place for Bob Marley's sons; Ziggy and Stephen Marleys.

It can be said that this compilation will have as many followers as the oponents cause it is difficult to make the masterpiece better than it already is.
Well, Legend Remixed is worth a listen though, just to check how it could have sounded if recorded 30 year later.

Hospital Records: Top Tunes

Today we would like to present tunes from a label, which has contributed to the developement of drum'n'bass music on an equal level as other legendary labels, such as Goldie's Metalheadz or Good Looking Records ran by LTJ Bukem - Hospital Records.

Label, whose best times are the relict of the past now unfortunately, releasing today  euro-pop shite (look at Netsky's tunes or High Contrast's latest LP) aimed at commercial profit.

That is why we have chosen (as a subjective selection) Hospital's finest tracks below. The order which they appear is strictly random:

London Elekttricity - Cum Dancing [Hospital Records, NHS46]

High Contrast - The Basement Track [Hospital Records, NHS60]

Logistics - Beatbox Master [Hospital Records, NHS112]

Danny Byrd - Shock Out [Hospital Records, NHS132]

Cyantific - Little Green Man [Hospital Records, NHS71]

Q Project - Living With Beaker (total science remix) [Hospital Records, NHS110]
